The Safety Centre (Hazard Alley) Limited

Company Registered Number: 270981

Registered Charity Number: 1019093

We use purpose-built scenarios to encourage children to identify everyday hazards and develop safe strategies to deal with potential emergencies. This 'experiential learning' approach makes the experience involving and stimulating for the children. There is no time to be bored! All the work underpins key PSHE and Citizenship elements of the National Curriculum, as does follow-up work that we provide in the form of follow-up visits made by our in-house teachers.

Information on preparing for your visit

In addition to schools, we can accommodate visits from other groups - brownies, cubs, guides, scouts etc. Many of the scenarios relate directly to work needed to gain badges eg first aid, road safety etc.

how to book a visit

Bookings should be made as early as possible in advance of your chosen date as we are very busy. Regular visitors often book up to a year in advance!

Provisional bookings can be made in the first instance. Confirmation is required as soon as possible and then your invoice will be sent requiring your deposit by return. Your full payment is required two weeks prior to your visit. However, please do not confirm your visit with us until you have confirmed the timings with your coach.

Should the number you have booked for change, please call us immedialtely as you may be able to decrease the charge and we have to allocate our guides for your group.

Your cheques should be made out to: 'The Safety Centre ( Hazard Alley) Limited'

We can accommodate up to 72 children per tour.

Sessions start from 9.30am, 12.30pm and 6.30 pm (these times are flexible) and the tour lasts for 2 hours (1 and a half in the evening). You should arrive at least 10-15 minutes BEFORE the tour starts to have an introduction and expect another 10-15 minutes at the end of the tour for a debrief. The overall time of your visit to us being a minimum of 2 and 1/2 hours. Staying or arriving for lunch will add time onto your visit.

We are open from 9 - 5, Monday to Friday, and there is a 24-hour answer phone facility.

To book a visit, please ring 01908 263009 between 10am and 4pm on weekdays, e-mail to info@safetycentre.co.uk or fax to 01908 262771.

the cost

The current cost of a tour is £7.82per child. This will be increasing to £8.31 from Sept 2009. There is no charge for adults accompanying the visiting children, evening visitors are asked to pay for a minimum of 15 children. See Bursary Fund Assistance for help with these costs.

All prices include VAT at the standard rate.

on-line evaluation programme

This programme is linked to your visit at the Safety Centre and pupils take interactive quizzes delivered in your school by the Safety Centre School Liaison Officers.

For more information about the programme, please look at the lesson plans in the "scenarios and lesson plans" page, within the shop lifting, crime and consequences, On-Line Evaluation Programme and follow-up lessons section at the bottom of the page.

follow-up visits

These are available by our Safety Centre teachers to reinforce directly the messages learned during the tour.  For more information on these, please look at the lesson plans in the scenario info and lesson plans page - Shop lifting, Crime and the consequences, Internet safety, Vandalism and Drug Awareness, with the appropriate follow-up lessons section.

At the present time, Milton Keynes schools receive 2 sessions per class free of any extra charge.  Should  a Milton Keynes school wish to have further follow-up sessions, these are charged at £40 +VAT.

From, September 2008, this charge will increase to £50 + VAT.

For schools outside the Milton Keynes Education area, there is a charge of £40 + VAT per session, with discounts for multiple sessions.  Again from September 2008, this charge will increase to £50 + Vat per session.

We are sorry to have to increase the cost for follow-up sessions, but increased costs of fuel have forced this upon us.  This will be our first increase since November 2005.  We hope that you still consider these sessions to be a valuable contribution to the curriculum and continue to use them in the classroom.

bursary fund assistance

There is a bursary available to give limited help with these costs to schools in Bucks and the surrounding counties. The aim of the bursary is to provide grants to meet all or part of the costs for children that are 'disadvantaged' in not to able to benefit from the Safety Centre facility. Application forms are available from the safety centre, though all requests are assessed by an independent panel of trustees. The trustees are not obliged to give reasons for turning down an application and have the absolute authority in all cases.
