The Safety Centre opened in 1994 as a partnership-based community safety project involving Thames Valley Police, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, health authorities, local government, other statutory organisations and the private sector. The centre is not centrally funded and as such relies heavily on donations and sponsorship.

History

The Safety Centre, "Hazard Alley", was officially opened in 1994 by Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Gloucester.

We celebrated our 10th birthday in 2004 and on this occasion The Duke of Kent visited while a local school group, Giffard Park, was on their tour.

Since our inception, over 150,000 school children have received our interactive safety education and we now have 20,000 children visiting us each year.

The Safety Centre has also encouraged and helped other areas to create their own centres.

In 2004, the Centre completed a major rebuild, including the installation of a disabled lift, which will improve the facilities for the children.

Comments from the schools :-

Millbrook Jnr, Kettering - Year 4

Without exception, the children related well to the guides. The visit was thoroughly enjoyed by the children and they learnt much. The timing for each scenario was very good and prevented the children from 'switching off'. The guides were excellent in holding the children's attention. The children found the first aid video to be very informative and they were able to demonstrate the recovery position the next day. The 999 video we brought back to school provoked discussion and reinforcement.

Wood End, Harpenden - Year 6

The children remembered the first aid video and could describe what to do as well as demonstrate. They thought the guides were very informative and had a good sense of humour. They have written a report on their visit and will be linking to the Safety Centre website. This was a well organized trip. Thank you.

Pope Paul Primary, Potters Bar - Year 5

The visit provided excellent opportunities to experience different scenarios and has led to some pertinent and effective learning post-visit. The 999 video was very useful to follow up procedure.

Burgoyne Middle, Potton - Year 5

Another very successful visit which compliments our PSME work. The children always come back fired with enthusiasm. Thank you.

Freemans Jnr, Wellingborough - Year 3

The staff felt very confident in leaving the children in the care of your guides who were very firm with their groups.

Willows First, Milton Keynes - Year 3

A really useful trip where the children were interested throughout, and have shown in subsequent lessons that they learnt a great deal.

10th Anniversary - please link to the Wycombe District Council for more news
