Annual Open Day

We look forward to seeing you soon.

This year's open day will be on Sunday 22nd July 2012. Free entry.

Making a visit

You need to ask yourself the following questions before embarking on a site visit:

• Have you made a pre-visit?
• What are your aims?
• What do you hope the pupils will gain from the visit?

• Which parts of the curriculum do you hope to support by a visit to the Safety Centre?

Preparing for a visit

Teachers and Group Leaders should view the useful information on how to prepare for your visit, and the section on curriculum support information:

Risk Assessment

In addition to schools, we can accommodate visits from other groups - brownies, cubs, guides, scouts etc. Many of the scenarios relate directly to work needed to gain badges eg first aid, road safety etc.

You need to decide where the visit will fit in the sequence of your planned activities. Is it to be an introduction, the main focus or the culmination of the topic/project?
• Visit our web site to familiarise and update yourself with the Safety Centre experience. Also to check national curriculum links and follow-up suggestions.
• Decide how much information you are going to give the pupils before the visit and what you are going to let them discover for themselves.
• Make sure you do not tell the pupils too much about the Safety Centre experience. The interactive nature of the different scenarios requires a problem solving approach from pupils. Too much prior knowledge could pre-empt innovative involvement.
• Have the pupils been given name badges?

Recording is an essential part of a visit. As the scenarios are mostly interactive, written recording would be inappropriate. If you wish to use photographic evidence, video recording or tape recording, please let us know.

On-line evaluation programme

This programme is linked to your visit at the Safety Centre and pupils take interactive quizzes delivered in your school by the Safety Centre School Liaison Officers.

For more information about the programme, please look at the lesson plans in the "scenarios and lesson plans" page, within the shop lifting, crime and consequences, On-Line Evaluation Programme and follow-up lessons section at the bottom of the page.

Follow-up visits

These are available by our Safety Centre teachers to reinforce directly the messages learned during the tour.  For more information on these, please look at the lesson plans in the scenario info and lesson plans page - Shop lifting, Crime and the consequences, Internet safety, Vandalism and Drug Awareness, with the appropriate follow-up lessons section.

At the present time, Milton Keynes schools receive 2 sessions per class free of any extra charge.  Should  a Milton Keynes school wish to have further follow-up sessions, please call 01908 263009 to discuss costs.

For schools outside the Milton Keynes Education area call 01908 263009 to discuss costs.

Bursary fund assistance

There is a bursary available to give help with the cost. The aim of the bursary is to provide grants for children that are 'disadvantaged' in order that they might benefit from the Safety Centre facility. Application forms are available from the safety centre, though all requests are assessed by an independent panel of trustees. The trustees are not obliged to give reasons for turning down an application and have the absolute authority in all cases.

The Safety Centre opened in 1994 as a partnership-based community safety project involving Thames Valley Police, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, health authorities, local government, other statutory organisations and the private sector. The centre is not centrally funded and as such relies heavily on donations and sponsorship.
